Ah, Rome (or Roma, if you must)– the city where history, culture, and pasta collide in a dazzling array of experiences. One of my favorite cities on Earth, I’ve been to Rome several times over the years (despite the crowds, Rome at Easter is magical).  If you’re a cinephile, it also happens to be the cultural heart of Italian cinema and the birthplace of Italian goddess Sophia Loren. Take a moment to remember Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck at the “Mouth of Truth” (Santa Maria in Cosmedin church, at the Piazza della Bocca della Verità) while you enjoy the beauty of ancient Rome.  Brace yourselves, fellow wanderers, because I've got the insider scoop on the top things to do in Rome, the best deals, cozy stays, delectable eats, essential know-hows, and a few secrets in this city guide that will make your Roman holiday truly unforgettable.

Things to Do: The Marvels of Rome

  • Colosseum & Roman Forum: Step into the ancient world, where gladiators once battled, and emperors ruled. Pro tip: Get a skip-the-line ticket to make the most of your time.

  • Vatican City: Marvel at the grandeur of St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Book tickets in advance to avoid the lines.  We did a VIP tour early in the morning and enjoyed the Sistine Chapel without the crowds.

  • Pantheon: A masterpiece of architecture, this well-preserved temple is a must-visit.

  • Trevi Fountain: Toss a coin to ensure your return to Rome. Join the throngs of people and make a wish!

  • Spanish Steps: A perfect spot for people-watching and soaking in the local atmosphere. Don't miss the Keats-Shelley House nearby.

  • Trastevere: Wander through narrow cobblestone streets and experience the bohemian charm of this historic neighborhood.

  • Piazza Navona: A lively square with stunning fountains and great cafes. Pro tip: Visit in the evening for a magical atmosphere.

  • Galleria Borghese: Home to an impressive collection of art, including masterpieces by Bernini and Caravaggio. Book tickets in advance.

  • Castel Sant'Angelo: Enjoy panoramic views of the city from this fortress-turned-museum.

  • Appian Way: Take a stroll or rent a bike on this ancient Roman road, lined with historic tombs.

  • Capitoline Museums: Discover an extensive collection of classical art and artifacts.

  • Palatine Hill: Explore the ruins of the palace of the Roman emperors.

  • House of Augustus and Casa di Livia: While at Palatine Hill, be sure to take a tour of these incredibly preserved luxurious homes of Caesar Augustus and Livia Drusilla, wife of Emperor Augustus and the first Empress of Rome. Step into the well-preserved rooms adorned with vibrant frescoes and meticulous gardens- it’s gorgeous and hasn’t always been open to the public, so make sure you book a tour.

  • Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore: Admire the stunning mosaics in one of Rome's major basilicas.

  • Street Art in Ostiense: Experience a different side of Rome's artistic expression in the Ostiense district.

Best Deals: City Guide to Navigate Rome on a Budget

  • Roma Pass: Offers free entry to two attractions, discounted entry to others, and unlimited public transportation for 48 or 72 hours.

  • Free Walking Tours: Several companies offer informative and entertaining walking tours of Rome, with city guides working for tips. If you want to do your walking tour at your own pace, we downloaded several walking tours from Rick Steves and LOVED them. They weren't free, but they were reasonable and let us pick and choose our own adventures.

  • Eat where the locals eat: Venture away from tourist hotspots to find delicious, budget-friendly meals. The best deals are always away from the tourist traps.

Where to Stay: Cozy Retreats in the Eternal City

  • Trastevere: Quaint streets, great nightlife, and a local vibe make this area a favorite.

  • Monti: A trendy neighborhood near the Colosseum, filled with boutiques and eateries.

  • Testaccio: Known for its culinary scene, this district offers a more authentic Roman experience.

  • Campo de' Fiori: Centrally located with a lively market during the day and buzzing nightlife.

Where to Eat: Savoring Rome's Culinary Delights

  • Trapizzino (Testaccio): Indulge in a modern twist on traditional Roman street food.

What to Know: Navigating Roman Realities

  • Public Restrooms: Scarce and often requiring payment. Seek out cafes or museums for cleaner facilities.

  • Beware of Pickpockets!!: Keep a close eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas and on public transportation.  My mom witnessed a team trying to steal from a tourist’s backpack INSIDE St. Peter’s Basilica.  They were caught, but the fact that happened in the Vatican shows it can happen anywhere.

  • Scammers: Be cautious of individuals offering unsolicited help or distracting you – they might also be trying to pick your pockets.

Pro Tips: Unlocking Rome's Secrets

  • Most People Don't Know: You can drink from the public fountains. The water is fresh, cold, and safe.

  • Enjoy the View: Climb to the top of the Janiculum Hill for a panoramic view of the city.

  • Don't Miss: The Aventine Keyhole – peep through it for a perfectly framed view of St. Peter's Basilica.

  • Book early AM tours to save time and energy around crowds.  We were in Rome over Easter, and while there were so many incredible sights, the crowds could be overwhelming at times.

Skip It: Saving Time and Energy

  • Hop-on, Hop-off Buses: While convenient, they might not be the fastest way to navigate Rome's traffic-laden streets. We've done this one too many times jet-lagged and actually fell asleep on the bus.

Rome awaits with its rich history, mouthwatering cuisine, and vibrant culture. So, lace up those walking shoes (seriously, it's a lot of walking), indulge in some gelato, and let the magic of the Eternal City sweep you off your feet!
