So you have 48 hours to enjoy the Big Apple. This weekend guide will get you started to the best of New York City. I lived in the Upper West Side in Manhattan, and as any New Yorker will tell you, we know our neighborhoods like the back of our hand.  It’s one of my favorite cities to explore with something to offer for everyone.  From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, this metropolis is a playground for the senses. Buckle up as we dive into the top things to do, snag some unbeatable deals, discover the perfect places to stay and eat, and arm you with essential tips for an unforgettable New York City weekend escapade.

  • Central Park Stroll: Escape the urban hustle with a daytime stroll through Central Park. Hungry? Snag a snack at any one of the myriad of vendors, or head to Central Park Boathouse for one of my favorite al fresco dining experiences in the city!

  • Broadway Extravaganza: You can’t go to New York City without watching a Broadway show.  Score discounted tickets at TKTS booths (around the city or in Times Square) or head directly to the theater to pick out the best available seats.

  • High Line Haven: Traverse the High Line, an elevated park built on an old railway track. Marvel at the urban greenery and enjoy stunning views of the cityscape.

  • Museum Marathon: Choose from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, or the Guggenheim. Pro tip: Many museums have pay-what-you-wish days or specific hours.  If it’s a nice day, enjoy a cocktail at Garden Bar in the sculpture garden. 

  • World Trade Center- 9/11 Memorial: Honoring the memory of 9/11 at the World Trade Center site is a deeply moving experience, with the somber yet resilient atmosphere at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. 

  • St. Patrick's Cathedral: With its Gothic Revival architecture and awe-inspiring stained glass windows, St. Patrick's Cathedral offers a peaceful retreat in the heart of bustling Manhattan.

  • Empire State Building: Take an elevator ride to the top of the Empire State Building for classic views of the city that never sleeps. The observation deck provides panoramic vistas day or night.

  • Times Square: A pulsating kaleidoscope of neon lights, towering billboards, and bustling crowds, Times Square stands as the iconic crossroads of entertainment, commerce, and the electrifying heartbeat of New York City. Just be careful to avoid during rush hour or peak times.

There are literally thousands of choices, but here are a few of my favorites- some classics, some off the beaten path but always great. 


  • Alice's Tea Cup: One of my favorite spots for afternoon tea in the city.  Indulge in delectable scones, sandwiches, and an extensive tea selection. It's a fairy tale come to life and perfect for a birthday party for the tea lover in your life.

  • Zabar's:  This was just a few blocks from my house and oh my gosh, it was difficult to not go every single day.  The family-owned market is a New York City institution- open since 1934 on the Upper West Side. You MUST stop by the deli for fresh bagels, smoked fish, and specialty cheeses. Check out the Banksy right outside- yep, even Banksy knows how great this place is.

  • Magnolia Bakery: Satisfy your sweet tooth at Magnolia Bakery, a haven of cupcakes that redefine the meaning of dessert.

  • Katz's Delicatessen: Dive into NYC's food scene at Katz's Deli. The pastrami on rye is legendary, and the atmosphere is quintessentially New York.

  • The Central Park Boathouse: This spot is not just a restaurant; it's a perfect escape in NYC.  With a gorgeous lakeside setting and panoramic views of the iconic Bow Bridge, the boathouse offers a tranquil escape from the city buzz.

  • The Palm Court at The Plaza Hotel:  If you want to check out a piece of New York history, this is it.  Nestled beneath the iconic stained glass ceiling, this legendary spot offers an incredible afternoon tea experience.  It’s like stepping back in time while indulging in a feast of delectable treats.

  • Pizza Pilgrimage: Embark on a pizza pilgrimage through the city's diverse neighborhoods. From classic New York slices to artisanal pies, savor the best of the city's pizza scene.

  • Food Markets: Immerse yourself in the culinary melting pot of food markets like Chelsea Market and Gansevoort Market. Sample international cuisines and discover hidden gems.

Enjoy The View: NYC Views to Savor


  • Dine with a View: Elevate your dining experience at The View in the Marriott Marquis. This revolving rooftop restaurant offers panoramic views of Times Square.

  • Top of the Rock Observation Deck: Head to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center for unparalleled views of Manhattan, including the Empire State Building and Central Park.

  • Empire State Building: This is a no brainer. So iconic, it's even featured in movies from An Affair to Remember to Sleepless in Seattle. The observation deck provides panoramic vistas day or night.

  • One World Observatory: Visit the One World Trade Center for sweeping views of Manhattan and beyond. The observatory offers a unique perspective, especially on the 9/11 Memorial and the Statue of Liberty.

  • Brooklyn Bridge: Walk or bike across the Brooklyn Bridge for postcard-perfect views of the Manhattan skyline. Sunset is a particularly magical time to cross.

  • DUMBO Waterfront: Stroll along the waterfront in the DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighborhood in Brooklyn for stunning views of the Manhattan Bridge and the cityscape.

  • Rooftop Bars: Experience the city's skyline from one of its many rooftop bars. Popular options include 230 Fifth Rooftop Bar, The Standard High Line, and The Press Lounge.

  • Stargazing: Most people don’t know that The High Line offers stargazing nights in partnership with the Amateur Astronomers Association. Witness the city lights and celestial wonders in one unforgettable experience.

  • Sunrise at the Top: Catch a sunrise at the Top of the Rock. The city waking up against the backdrop of dawn is a magical sight.

  • Metro Maneuvering: Master the NYC subway system—it's the fastest way to zip around the city. Get a MetroCard, and you'll be navigating like a local in no time.

  • Weather Wisdom: Pack layers! NYC weather can be unpredictable, so having a light jacket (or big puffy jacket) and sweater handy is a must.

  • Early Bird Gets the View: Beat the crowds by visiting popular attractions early in the morning. You'll snag better photos and enjoy a more relaxed experience.

  • The Empire State Building: This is an iconic emblem of New York City that you don’t want to miss. From its majestic Art Deco design to the breathtaking panoramic views of the city lights, skipping the Empire State Building means missing out on an essential part of the Big Apple.

  • Grand Central Terminal: Marvel at the grandeur of Grand Central Terminal. Don't forget to whisper sweet nothings at the Whispering Gallery and indulge in a classic experience at the Grand Central Oyster Bar.

Skip It:  Avoid if Possible


  • Times Square at rush hour. Trust me, the sparkle wears off when you're elbowing your way through a sea of tourists.

  • Top of the Empire State Building during Peak Hours: While the views are undoubtedly breathtaking, the lines during peak hours can be overwhelming. Opt for an early morning visit or explore other skyline viewpoints.

  • Times Square Chain and Touristy Restaurants: Times Square is a must-see, but the chain restaurants surrounding it can be overpriced and lack the authentic New York culinary experience. Venture a few blocks away for diverse and local dining options.
