Discover top attractions, insider tips, delightful stays, and where to savor the finest tastes in the heart of the British capital.

Must-Visit London Attractions: A Tapestry of History and Modernity

Big Ben in London

  • The Tower of London: Dive into centuries of history at the iconic Tower of London. Explore the Crown Jewels, walk along the medieval walls, and meet the ravens guarding the tower.  According to the legend, if the ravens ever leave the Tower, disaster will befall the kingdom. To prevent this, King Charles II ordered that at least six ravens should always reside at the Tower of London. The ravens have been kept there ever since (their wings are clipped to ensure they never fly too far from the Tower, which feels like cheating, doesn’t it?).

  • The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben: Iconic symbols of London, the Houses of Parliament and the Big Ben clock tower stand proudly along the River Thames. Snap photos of these timeless landmarks.

  • Buckingham Palace:  Located in the heart of London, serves as the official residence and administrative headquarters of the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom and heart of the Royal Family. Renowned for its iconic facade, opulent State Rooms, and the Changing of the Guard ceremony, the palace stands as a symbol of British monarchy and tradition.

  • The British Museum: Immerse yourself in global history at the British Museum, home to a vast collection of artifacts from different cultures and periods.

  • Westminster Abbey: Step into the hallowed halls of Westminster Abbey, where royal weddings and coronations have taken place for centuries. Marvel at the stunning Gothic architecture and rich history.  It’s also the resting place of some of the world’s most interesting people from Charles Darwin to Charles Dickens, Sir Isaac Newton and even Stephen Hawking.

  • Shakespeare's Globe: Take a quick trip outside London and step back in time to experience the Bard's plays performed in the open-air theatre, just as they were in Shakespeare's day.

Where to Eat: Savoring London's Culinary Tapestry

  • Dishoom: Indulge in the flavors of Bombay at Dishoom. This popular eatery offers a modern take on traditional Indian cuisine.

  • Sketch: Experience culinary art at Sketch, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Mayfair. The whimsical décor and innovative menu make it a feast for the senses.

  • Afternoon Tea: Enjoy this quintessentially British experience, savoring delicate finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of teas. Just be warned, there is a fierce debate about jam or cream first on scones (I found out the hard way when I put cream on the scone first, like a crazy American, mortifying my British hosts.)

  • Sunday Roast: Sample a traditional Sunday roast, featuring roasted meat, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables, and gravy. My other favorite go-to is Bangers and Mash.  You almost can’t go wrong.

  • Fish and Chips: Grab a classic fish and chips takeaway, enjoyed best wrapped in newspaper and eaten by the River Thames.

  • Borough Market: Dive into the culinary delights of Borough Market. Sample gourmet treats, fresh produce, and international cuisines in this food lover's paradise.

Pro Tips: London Calling

  • Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tours: Opt for hop-on, hop-off bus tours for a convenient way to explore London's top attractions. Enjoy flexibility and insightful commentary during your sightseeing journey.  It’s another favorite of our family.

  • Consider the London Pass: Gain access to multiple attractions and public transport for a discounted price.

  • Pack an Umbrella and a Coat: London is known for its unpredictable weather, so be prepared for rain and a chill (yes, even in the summer).

  • Westminster Bridge Sunset: Capture breathtaking sunset views of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament from Westminster Bridge. It's a photographer's dream come true.

Don't Miss: Timeless London Highlights

  • Theater: If you love live theater, DO NOT MISS A SHOW IN LONDON!  You won’t know you’ll regret it, but you will.  It’s a mistake to not take the time- and money- to watch the best actors in the world on stage.  I may face some serious Broadway side-eye for this, but the performances and shows I’ve seen in London are better than anywhere else in the world (with the exception of Frost/Nixon on Broadway- that was an incredible show.)

Skip It: Save Time for Future Adventures

  • Changing of the Guard: While the Changing of the Guard ceremony is iconic, it can draw large crowds. Also- don’t be that guy and try to distract them.  Come on, it’s not cute if you’re 5, it’s awful and embarrassing if you’re 45.

  • London Eye Queue: Skip the long queues at the London Eye by booking tickets in advance. Opt for a timed entry to maximize your experience.

From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, London has something to offer everyone. With this guide as your companion, embark on a journey to discover the magic of this vibrant city and create lasting memories to cherish. Happy exploring!
