Labor Day weekend 2024 is finally here and travelers across the United States are gearing up for what is expected to be one of the busiest holiday travel periods in recent years. According to AAA, domestic travel during this time is forecasted to increase by almost 10% compared to last year, reflecting a strong appetite for end-of-summer getaways. With more Americans hitting the road, taking to the skies, and setting sail, this year’s Labor Day travel is shaping up to break records and (hopefully) create memorable experiences.

Labor Day 2024 Record-Breaking Air Travel

U.S. airports are bracing for an exceptionally busy Labor Day weekend. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for record-breaking travel and passenger volume during this holiday period, with an expected 8.5% increase in travelers compared to 2023. Major airlines like United Airlines and American Airlines anticipate their busiest Labor Day travel- ever- signaling the resurgence of air travel after years of pandemic-related disruptions.

For those flying, it’s essential to plan ahead, as crowded airports and fully booked flights are likely. Arriving at the airport early, utilizing mobile check-in, and being prepared for potential delays can help ensure a smoother travel experience. With so many people eager to take to the skies, securing your spot on a flight might require a bit more foresight than in previous years. As always, don't forget to bring your patience.

Affordable Gas Prices Fuel Road Trips

While air travel is set to break records, many Americans will also be hitting the road for Labor Day weekend. Fortunately for drivers, GasBuddy projects that the average price of gas on Labor Day will be $3.27 per gallon, making it the lowest Labor Day price since 2021 and nearly 15% cheaper than last year. This drop in fuel prices is likely to encourage more road trips, with families and friends embarking on last-minute adventures before the summer ends.

Top Domestic Destinations

Seattle has emerged as the top domestic destination for Labor Day weekend in 2024, with a nearly 30% increase in popularity compared to last year when it also topped the list. The main reason?  Seattle is a departure point for Alaska cruises, which are completely sold out for the holiday weekend. In addition to Seattle, the nearby destinations of Mt. Rainier and Tacoma, Washington, offer stunning natural beauty and outdoor activities that attract visitors during this time.

Orlando, Florida, and New York City also remain major draws for Labor Day travelers. Orlando’s theme parks and family-friendly attractions continue to be a magnet for those looking to make the most of the long weekend. Meanwhile, New York City offers a mix of cultural events, shopping, and sightseeing that appeals to a wide range of travelers.

International Travel and Planning Ahead

For those looking to travel internationally, AAA reports that Vancouver, British Columbia, is the top destination for Americans this Labor Day weekend, followed by popular European cities such as Rome, Italy, London in the U.K., Paris, France, and Dublin, Ireland. The appeal of these destinations lies in their rich cultural experiences, historical significance, and the allure of exploring new places as summer draws to a close.

Labor Day weekend is also an opportune time to plan for future trips, particularly for those interested in cruises. With Alaska cruises sold out for this holiday, now is the perfect time to start planning your cruise for next year, ensuring you secure the best deals and preferred travel dates.

Conclusion

Whether you’re planning to fly, drive, or sail, Labor Day 2024 is set to be a landmark holiday for travel. With domestic travel on the rise, record-breaking air passenger volumes, and more affordable gas prices, this Labor Day offers a prime opportunity to enjoy one last summer adventure.
